The Rise of K-Cinema and Its Discontents
Description: With the popularity of “Asia Extreme” cinema at the turn of the 21st century, Korean cinema has achieved global prominence, epitomized by recent cultural phenomena such as Squid Game and Parasite. The unprecedented success of K-cinema, however, prompts questions about the way “Koreanness” (similar to the “J” in Japanimation) is constructed and received by contemporary global prosumers. In this lecture, I aim to highlight the steps through which K-cinema has emerged and flourished, as well as the paradoxical “discontents” generated by the increasing recognition of K-culture.
